(Makes about 3 1/2 to 4 dozen.)
Method:

Instructions for jar: Pour sugar in a 1 liter
jar and smooth over to make even.

In medium
bowl, combine flour, salt, cloves, ginger,
cinnamon and baking soda. Stir to mix
thoroughly. Gently spoon flour mixture over
sugar and press down lightly.

Carefully add
raisins on top of flour. Place lid on jar.

For baking: Preheat oven to 350(176C). Empty contents or jar
into large bowl. Add egg and butter or margarine.

Beat on low speed or by hand to blend. Roll dough
into balls 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide and place on un-greased cookie sheet.

Fatten with bottom or a
glass dipped in sugar.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes
until edges are lightly browned. Remove from oven
and let cookies cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute
before transferring to cooling rack.
