Children's Party Cakes Recipes - Toy Telephone Cake

Ingredients

  • 15cm square sponge cake

  • 50g butter icing

  • 30ml apricot jam, warmed and sieved

  • 275g marzipan

  • 350g sugar-paste icing

  • yellow, blue, red and black food coloring

  • liquorices strips

  • 115g royal icing

  • 20cm square cake board

  • piping nozzle

  • small greaseproof paper piping bag

  • No 1 writing nozzle

Method:

  1. Split and fill the cake with butter icing. Trim to the shape of a telephone. Round off the edges and cut a shallow groove where the receiver rests on the telephone. Place the cake on the board and brush with apricot jam.

  2. Cover the cake with marzipan then sugar-paste  icing. Tint half the remaining sugar-paste  icing yellow, a small piece blue and the rest of the icing red. To make the dial, cut out an 8cm diameter circle in yellow and a 4cm diameter circle in blue. Stamp out 12 red discs for the numbers with the end of a piping nozzle and cut out a red receiver. Position on the cake with water.

  3. Twist the liquorices around to form a curly cord and use royal icing to stick one end to the telephone and the other end to the receiver. Tint the royal icing black and pipe the numbers on the discs and the child's name on the telephone.
