Children's Party Cakes Recipes - Spaceship Cake

Ingredients

  • 25cm square sponge cake

  • 225g butter icing

  • 60ml apricot jam, warmed and sieved

  • 350g marzipan

  • 450g sugar-paste icing

  • blue, red and black food coloring

  • 30cm square cake board

  • 4 silver candles and holders

  • gold paper stars

Method:

  1. Split and fill the sponge cake with butter icing. Cut a 10cm/4in wide piece diagonally across the middle of the cake, about 25cm/10in long. Shape the nose end and straighten the other end.

  2. From the off-cuts make three 7.5cm/3in triangles for the wings and top of the ship. Cut two smaller triangles for the booster jets. Position the main body, wings and top of the cake diagonally across the board. Add extra pieces of cake in front of the top triangle. Brush the cake and booster jets with apricot jam, then cover with a layer of marzipan and sugar-paste  icing.

  3. Divide the remaining sugar-paste  icing into three. Tint blue, pink and black. Roll out the blue icing and cut it into 1cm strips. Stick around the base of the cake with water and outline the boosters. Cut a 2.5cm strip and stick down the centre of the spaceship.

  4. Roll out the pink and black sugar-paste  icing separately and cut shapes, numbers and the child's name to finish the design. When complete, position the boosters.

  5. Make small cubes with the off-cuts of sugar-paste  icing and use to stick the candles to the cake board. Decorate the board with gold stars.
