Children's Party Cakes Recipes - Kite Cake

Ingredients

  • 25cm square sponge cake

  • 225g butter icing

  • 45ml apricot jam, warmed and sieved

  • 675g sugar paste icing

  • yellow, red, green, blue and black food coloring

  • 450g marzipan

  • 115g royal icing

  • 30cm square cake board

  • wooden cocktail stick

  • small greaseproof paper piping bag

  • No 8 star nozzle

  • 6 candles and holders


Method:

  1. Trim the cake into a kite shape, then split and fill with butter icing. Place diagonally on the cake board and brush with apricot jam. Cover with a layer of marzipan.

  2. Tint 225g of the sugar-paste icing pale yellow and cover the cake. Make a template of the face, tie and buttons and mark on to the cake with a cocktail stick. Divide the rest of the sugar-paste icing into four and Tint red, green, blue and black. Cut out the features and stick on with water.

  3. Pipe a royal icing border around the base of the cake.

  4. For the kite's tail, roll out each Color separately and cut two 4 x 1cm lengths in blue, red and green. Pinch each length to shape into a bow.

  5. Roll the yellow into a long rope and lay it on the board in a wavy line from the narrow end of the kite. Stick the bows in place with water. Roll balls of yellow sugar-paste, stick on the board with a little royal icing and press in the candles.
