Children's Party Cakes Recipes - Computer Game Cake

Ingredients

  • 15cm square sponge cake

  • 115g butter icing

  • 45ml apricot jam, warmed and sieved

  • 225g marzipan

  • 275g sugar-paste icing

  • black, blue, red and yellow food coloring

  • royal icing, to decorate

  • 20cm square cake board

  • wooden cocktail stick

  • fine paintbrush

  • small greaseproof paper piping bag


Method:

  1. Split and fill the cake with a little butter icing. Cut 2.5ccm/1in off one side of the cake and 1cm off the other side. Round the corners slightly. Place on the cake board and brush with apricot jam. Cover with a layer of marzipan.

  2. Tint 225g/8oz of the sugar-paste  black. Use to cover the cake. Reserve the trimmings. With a cocktail stick, mark the speaker holes and position of the screen and knobs.

  3. Tint half the remaining sugar-paste  pale blue, roll out and cut out a 6cm square for the screen. Stick in the centre of I the game with a little water. Tint a small piece of sugar-paste  red and the rest yellow. Use to cut out the switch and controls. Stick them in position with water. Roll the reserved black sugar-paste  icing into a long, thin sausage and edge the screen and base of the cake.

  4. With a fine paintbrush, draw the game on to the screen with a little blue coloring. Pipe letters on to the buttons with royal icing.
