Camping Tent Cake
Ingredients
20cm square
sponge cake
115g butter icing
45ml apricot jam,
warmed and sieved
450g marzipan
500g sugar paste
icing
brown, orange,
green, red and blue food coloring
115g royal icing
50g desiccated
coconut
chocolate mint
sticks
25cm square cake
board
wooden cocktail
sticks
fine paint brush
4 small
greaseproof paper, piping bags
No 1 basket weave
and plain nozzles
Method:
Split and fill
the cake with butter icing- Cut the cake in half.
Cut one half in two diagonally from the top right
edge to the bottom left edge to form the roof of the
tent. Stick the two wedges, back-to-back, on top of
the rectangle with jam. Trim to 10cm/4in high and
use the trimmings on the base. Place the cake
diagonally on the board and brush with jam.
Cover with
marzipan, reserving some for modeling. Tint
50g/2oz of the sugar-paste icing
brown and cover one end of the tent. Tint the
rest orange and cover the rest of the cake. Cut
a semicircle for the tent opening and a central
7.5cm/3in slit. Layover the brown end. Secure
the flaps with royal icing. Put halved cocktail
sticks in the corners and ridge.
Tint the coconut
green. Spread the board with a thin layer of royal
icing and sprinkle with the coconut.
Tint the reserved
marzipan flesh-Color and use to make a model of a
child. Paint on a blue T-shirt and leave to dry.
Tint some royal icing brown and pipe on the hair
with a basket weave nozzle. Tint the icing and pipe
on the mouth and eyes. Make a bonfire with broken
chocolate mint sticks.
